The internet market is turning highly competitive with each passing day. Everyone out there is trying to apply their best practices to get the maximum profit.
Most of my friends and followers who are starting their blogs or are already running their own digital marketing/product based company usually look for advices relating to the most important factors about On-page SEO ranking.
So, today I decided to write a post concerning this topic so that it educates the readers with some extra hot points which is usually not available on the internet.
Firstly, let’s begin with
What is On-page SEO?
In very simple words, whatever is done on the page of a website i.e. website design, content, images, breadcrumb navigation, title meta etc. falls under on-page optimization. After having an idea about on-page SEO, let us now go through the various SEO techniques that can improve the website ranking at a faster rate.
What are different On-page SEO techniques?
On-page SEO has more than 49 techniques which are helpful in improving a website’s keyword ranking. This post will give you an overview about only few of those important techniques which are important according to Google and other search engines.
There is no doubt about the fact that content plays a very crucial role, but one should also pay attention to the various other onpage techniques. Given below are the different kinds:-
Once one is done with designing the website, the very next step is usually the breadcrumb navigation. This is one of the most important steps in popularizing a website because it allows users to navigate their website in a structured way, since they always have an insight about the location and the depth of the home page.
Recently, Google has also started integrating breadcrumb navigation within the SERPs, which makes the listing even more trustworthy and gives it a more attractive look. And one can also target on some keywords from this list and earn the benefit of boosting up the rank.
2. Keyword Research:
The second important step soon after creating a website is to make sure that you have a proper excel sheet created for jotting down all the targeted keyword. I would recommend that the initial keyword research be done through Google adwords keyword planner. After sucking out these free keywords one can then go for the other paid tools like seopowersuite.com, www.semrush.com and more.
Though there are large varieties of paid and free tools for keyword research, but I would always suggest everyone to rely upon Google Adwords keyword planner for most blogs and posts.
How will one decide upon the convertible keywords for their business?
Let me explain it to you with an example:
Let’s say, I want to open a digital marketing institute in Delhi, India. Then I have to insert at least a minimum of 8-10 keywords related to the concerned topic on Google keyword planner.
In case one lacks in providing a total of 8-10 keywords then there is nothing to worry about. One has to simply log in to their country’s local Google search engine and type the relevant keywords. What one can get next is the list of a minimum of 2-3 relevant competitors on the very first page. Google suggests some keyword on its own on the search bar all the time for the user’s assistance. That way one can find some good keywords as well. Attached below is an example of the above step elaborated with a screen shot.
In the following list you can get a glimpse of your co-competitors. Open one by one the website with the application of the command Ctrl + U.
It will open the view source of your competitor’s websites as shown in the image attached below
Here you have to apply the commnd Ctrl + F to find the terms one by one
Create a list of keywords which is used for the title, the description and for some extra keywords. You can search upto the 5th page looking for the relevant competitors on Google Search and apply the same command over them as well.
Soon after collecting few keywords like in the box given below,
- 1. digital marketing certification course
- 2. best digital marketing institute in delhi
- 3. top digital marketing institute in delhi
- 4. digital marketing institute in delhi
- 5. digital marketing training courses
- 6. digital marketing training in delhi
- 7. digital marketing training institute in delhi
- 8. best digital marketing training in delhi
- 9. advance digital marketing course institutes in delhi
- 10. digital marketing course in delhi with placement
You can go to the keyword planner tool and put your keywords on the tool search bar.
One more important matter that has to be kept in mind is that if you are an advertiser then always try to dig only those keywords that have more search volume and low completion but with a lesser bid.
If you are a blogger then always look for high search volume, less completion and high bid keywords.
My suggestion to people would be to explore different tabs for keyword ideas for various advertising group’s to get better quality keywords as the advertisers are already bidding upon these keywords. Hence there are more chances for a better conversions rate.
Finally the very last step in keyword research is finding the exact trend for your keywords and taking the call on whether to target them on not.
Analyzing on targeting the keywords on the appropriate time should be the motive behind so that a proper plan can be set up according for your campaigns.
Therefore we should always keep a check on the Google Trend tool for the latest keywords and take the further steps accordingly.
There are various options in a Google trends tool like: Interest by region, related topics and related queries etc. So you can also utilize them.
You can refer to the snapshot below for a better idea.
3. Content Writing:
Quality content is always a big challenge in small as well as big enterprises. The last few years have witnessed a lot of new updates brought in by Google in the field of content marketing. Improvements can be brought in the content quality with the help of Google panda, Hummingbird, Rank brain and semantic search importance etc. Whereas, these updates have further complicated the industry problems related to content in a large way.
In the last few years, lots of small and big websites were penalised by panda update due to which they faced huge depletion in the website traffic by around 50-80%. This shows how rapidly Google’s is turning powerful in concerns of content quality.
And that’s why I would like to share few points which you should always remember before writing the content.
- Write fresh and original content from scratch rather than stuffing the keywords and duplicating most of the content.
- Identify the content type ( Content for traffic / Content for lead / Sales )
- Content for traffic :- Articles, Blogs, Info-graphics
- Content for lead / Sales: - White papers, eBooks, Mini courses, Free trail etc.
- Identify the keywords
- Identify the Title
- Cover the targeted keyword at least once in the starting of the title
- Try to come up with an attractive title and a numeric value associated with the article.
Eg: 13 things about digital marketing you may have not known
- Mention the purpose of the content (how the content is going to be used?)
- Mention and enlist important points
- Try to embed more visual substances: infographics and videos.
- Write at least a 700-1000 word’s content since Google always prefers a detailed content over a brief one.
Few resources to come up with an awesome content at a very minimum cost:-
1. iwriter.com :
If you want better quality in a content then let them know your exact demands and always specify them regarding highlighting of the main points, sub heading titles etc.
2. textbroker.com :
Though I do not have much experience regarding this particular website but my colleagues and friends have always given positive reviews and feedbacks regarding it. Trying this website is should not cause harm for sure.
3. fiverr.com :
This is my second preference. I have been using it since the last 3 years and the rate and quality that it offers is quite satisfactory. Everything here is available at a rate of 5$.
I mostly prefer this website not for content writing but for infogrphics, logos, social shares, whiteboard videos etc.
4. Use competitor’s blogs, Industry magazines and Google alerts to get new ideas for content.
4. Meta tags:
As far as On-Page SEO is concerned, these are the key factors when one is looking for ranking their keywords online in the easiest way. This method can provide a big boost in all the rankings.
Title Tag: It is a known fact that the backend has a fix pixel length concept behind the meta tags. But there isn’t any hard and fast rules regarding the length of title and the meta description tags. However the recommended length of title is somewhere around 55 to 60 characters including spaces, as more than this is likely to be truncated in the search results. Therefore it is advisable to keep the title length upto 55 characters including spaces for the best possible rendering. You can go up to 60 characters at the most, but try not to exceed them.
Formula to Write Great Meta Title:
Include targeted keywords in Start + USP’s+ Service convey message + Cover Business Location + Business Name
An appealing description can not only improve your keywords ranking but can intensify your website’s click through rate too. Hence I always suggest everyone concerned to write a marketing message within 160 characters.
Formula to write a great Meta Title:
Business Name + USP’s + Targeted Keyword + Business Location + Services convey message
Headings: A heading has its own importance in content marketing. It is mainly divided into 6 types.
H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6
I always try to cover H1, H2 and H3 within my articles. In case one is able to cover their targeted keywords in these headings then they can observe a great improvement in the rankings.
Let me narrate to you an incident where I made some changes in the heading including the targeted keywords and that tiny change helped the article in changing its position from the 3rd page to the 1st one. That is why I advise everyone to never ignore the importance of an attractive heading.
5. URL Structure:
As we all know, Google bots are not humanly. All they can do is just go through some human written codes and take the decision by showing us relevant results.
Similarly, in the same way url also has some standard format of a page on the web. In case you write down a wrong format, it will signal out a difficulty while the content is in the bots. This generally is an unfavourable condition.
Given below are few examples of a good and a bad URL structure:
A bad URL is:
https:// www.searchenginetimes.com /seotipsforbeginners/ or
https:// www.searchenginetimes.com /173134/publish/data2/seo_Tips.html
A Good URL is:
Follow the standard format for creating your page’s url so that bots can easily read and understand the content in question.
6. Internal Linking:
Internal linking is not as big a factor as the others mentioned above. But whenever one links their low authority pages using attractive anchor texts with the high authority page like Home page etc., it adds up to the improvement of the internal pages authority and improves website engagement.
SEO predominantly has 9 types of site maps available and each one has a different purpose to serve. I personally operate normal Html and Xml Site maps for the users and search engines respectively. If you have news websites then I will recommend you to create Google News site map.
Html Site map:
HTML site map gives a general overview of the site, just the pages full of information that a user needs to be concerned with. If you’re on a web site and you’re looking for the shopping cart or the ‘Contact Us’ page and can’t find it, you have to just go to the sitemap and search it there. While this is geared towards the users, it can also help your search engine ranking because your site is user-friendly and catering to the site visitor.
XML Site map:
XML site map is the best way to inform the search engines about your new pages. If you add these sites map to the Google webmaster then they start crawling your pages and indexing them on their database. Supposing, they face any challenges in indexing your pages, it starts showing you all the details in webmaster tools so that you are able to take the action on these errors for getting more and more pages to be indexed on search engines. If your pages do not get indexed by search engines then there is no use for those pages.
This above description has now provided everyone with a wide idea about the importance of sites map and the appropriate value that they have in the eyes of Google and other search engines.
For creating a site map you can either use www.xml-sitemaps.com or take help from the Google.
8. Responsive Web Design:
A responsive web design makes your web page look good on all devices (desktops, tablets, and phones).
Responsive Web Design deals with using CSS and HTML to resize, hide, shrink, enlarge, or move the content to make it look good on screen.
Google has already stated a lot of times that responsive website design is their preferred mobile configuration. After bringing in a huge increase in traffic trends on mobile phones and other devices, Google has now started considering it as a viable and important SEO for ranking.
It is a recommendation from my side that you make your website responsive not only for search engines but also to make the users comfortable to play with the website from two distinct devices.
For responsive website testing you can use the websites such as: www.mobiletest.me or you can trigger the command on Google “responsive design checker”.
9. Schema Markup:
This was not a widely popular SEO element since the time Bing’s Sr. Product Manager, Duane Forrester confirmed that schema markup is a key ranking factor. With this very declaration now a day’s most companies are trying to utilize this factor to the optimum. Through the schema markup implementation you can send a positive signal to search engines about the business and its content.
Schema Markup can enhance search visibility via rich snippets, featured snippets and Knowledge Graph results. Structured data is a great way of creating more search engine-friendly signals, which can indirectly impact search rankings.
10. Google Map and Reviews:
My suggestion to every single person would be to always make use of Google as much possible. Google always has the tendency of putting their own products over others. This phenomenon requires as many users as possible for accomplishment.
If you have a small and local business then calming and optimizing Google Business can be a good option to hold a position for oneself over Google.
For local businesses there are similar sites like Google Business, Yelp Listing, Yahoo Listing in your local areas. These sites aren’t as reliable as Google or Yahoo. Wherever in local businesses these local website are going play a much better role than the conventional Google and Yahoo websites. Reviews posted by these website and other type of regular engagements can raise the local rankings within just few months.
11. Website Speed:
This SEO technique is becoming evident with every passing day, more so after the release of penguin 2.0.
Google has been investing a huge amount of money in making the website run faster. In every Google I/O someone always brings up the importance of speed and their desire to include the fastest websites in their index. In order to ‘force’ web site owners to take up speed into consideration, they have officially added speed as one of the ranking factors.
Now we certainly know that the web site speed does matter when it comes to SEO and ranking. Hence, as a webmaster your job is to consider Google’s recommendations so that your website develops as swiftly as needed.
Again, for improving your website’s speed and performance you can use Google Page Speed tool or GTmetrix, as these tools are highly acceptable and recommended. They give you detailed descriptions regarding your website issues.
Therefore, for resolving these problems if one isn’t technically sound then they can take the help of the website developer or you can hire freelancer from websites like www.fiverr.com, www.Freelance.com www.odesk.com etc.
Website images and their representation can be a powerful way of attracting users. If one is putting efforts in creating images then one must write few words about those images and start pulling in the extra traffic to their website. Whereas, before proceeding ahead I would recommend you to always use try and use original light weight images.
How to write alt and title tags for Images?
Before writing down the alt tags I always suggest to start with the folder’s and the image’s name in a proper manner rather than giving just a random number or a text. This signifies that, according to Google if a keyword name is denoted then it usually is regarded as a good sign.
Let’s come to the next step of alt and title tags.
Let me explain it to you with an example:
Folder Name: On-page SEO
Image Name inside the On-page SEO Folder: Organic SEO
Image Title Tag: Organic SEO
Alt Tag (Most Important): Organic SEO Tips
Image Descriptions: Best organic SEO tips by Search Engine Times
If you follow all these things then there sure you are going to see next month extra traffic boom in your analytics.
If you follow the above give tactics then there definitely will be an evident traffic boom in the analytics in the upcoming months.
13. Social Buttons:
The very last and the least important point according to me is the utilization of social buttons. Though, not directly but their numbers and shares can give you an indirect boost in web traffic.
So do not shy away from going through a small research and further placing the social icons on the proper locations of your website and posts and observing the boost in traffic.
If you are an e-commerce company, then always attach the social share buttons on any other part of your website apart from the product pages as they distract the viewers through their attractive icons.
Let me give you an example relating to this point
Let say you visited www.alibaba.com
You saw an attractive product and went to the product description page for checking out the further details of the product. While going through the descriptions you suddenly saw some social buttons and clicked upon them. That click took you directly to the social media page, let’s say Facebook. Once you enter the Facebook environment, there are fewer chances of you returning back to the product page.
On this note, I would like to conclude the article hoping that this post was successful in explaining you what is an On-page SEO and what are the different On-page SEO techniques.
